Almost the entire population of baby southern sea elephants has died due to bird flu

The researchers do not yet know how the disease has affected the adults, but their research paper, presented in Marine Mammal Science, says that one of the densely populated beaches recorded 46 deaths among adult elephant seals, although it is rare to see even one such death in a year. Scientists attribute this to mammal-to-mammal transmission of the virus, which could happen when the disease is transmitted from sea lions to sea elephants.
