53-year-old V. Phonmai bought 5kg of shellfish at a market near the Thai capital last December. She prepared a seafood dish at home. When she sat down to dinner, she saw ball-shaped objects in the sink, one of which was mother-of-pearl. She immediately realised it was a pearl.
Phonmai kept the object and brought it back to the capital in January to ask experts for their opinion. After examining it, they said it was indeed a pearl. Its weight is 6.8 carats.
